PHELPS SCRATCHES FROM OLYMPIC 200 FREE

Michael Phelps has officially scratched himself from the 200m freestyle for the upcoming 2012 Olympic Games. He is now eligible to swim just seven events - the 100 fly, 200 fly, 200 IM, 400 IM and all three relays.

Phelps’s coach, Bob Bowman, said they made the move to allow Phelps to focus more energy on Team USA’s relays.

Taking Phelps’s place in the 200m free in London will be Ricky Berens. Berens finished third in the 200 fre behind Phelps and Lochte on the third day of competition. Also, Davis Tarwater has been added to the team in the 800 free relay by virtue of his seventh-place finish in the 200 free
