LOCHTE AND BERENS WIN GOLD ON FINAL NIGHT IN CHARLOTTE

CHARLOTTE, N.C. RENANG INDONESIA – Ryan Lochte (Daytona Beach, Fla.) picked up his first medal of the meet with a gold in the men’s 200m medley on the final night of the Charlotte UltraSwim Grand Prix. Ricky Berens (Charlotte, N.C.) won his second gold medal in front of a hometown crowd in the men’s 100m free.

Lochte took the gold in the 200m medley after holding off Conor Dwyer (Winnetka, Ill.) and Eric Shanteau (Lilburn, Ga.). His time of 1:57.63 was a meet record and came in his sixth event over the course of the four-day meet. Dwyer would touch the wall next in 1:59.29 and Shanteau, winning his third medal of the meet, came in third in 2:00.46.

The women’s timed finals in the 800m free started the night. Katie Ledecky from Curl Burke Swim Club won the race in a meet-record time of 8:25.85. Gillian Ryan (Kutztown, Pa.) touched second in 8:36.56 and Elizabeth Beisel (Saunderstown, R.I.) scored a bronze with an 8:37.40 swim in the morning heats.

Caitlin Leverenz (Tucson, Ariz.) collected her second gold of the meet in the women’s 200m medley with a time of 2:10.25. Ariana Kukors (Auburn, Wash.) and Elizabeth Pelton (Baltimore, Md.) finished the event second and third, respectively, with 2:11.09 and 2:11.87.

Pelton would collect her second medal of the night with a first place finish in the women’s 200m breast touching in 2:09.41. Great Britain’s Stephanie Proud who finished in 2:10.58 came in second and Canada’s Dominique Bouchard captured the final spot on the podium with a time of 2:11.10.

National Junior Team member Ryan Murphy from Bolles School Sharks edged Colombia’s Omar Pinzon in the men’s 200m backstroke to capture gold in 1:58.09. Pinzon finished three-hundredths of a second behind Murphy in 1:58.12. Nick Thoman (Cincinnati, Ohio) came in third with a time of 2:00.26.

Lia Neal (Long Beach, Calif.) captured the gold in the women’s 100m free with a time of 54.35 edging out Jessica Hardy (Long Beach, Calif.) by even a closer margin than in the men’s 200m back. Hardy’s time of 54.36 was her fourth medal of the meet, as she won the 50m breast and 50m free along with silver in the 100m breast. Natalie Coughlin (Vallejo, Calif.) rounded out the top three spots with a time of 54.59.

Berens, a Charlotte native, won his second gold medal of the meet in the 100m freestyle with a time of 49.07. Anthony Ervin (Valencia, Calif.) took home the silver with an impressive time of 49.61. Australia’s Matthew Targett won the bronze in 49.65.

The final individual event of the meet was the men’s 1500m free. Chad LaTourette (Mission Viejo, Calif.) led the field of talented distance swimmers with a time of 15:06.73. The second and third finishers were Connor Jaeger from Club Wolverine and Michael McBroom (The Woodlands, Texas). Jaeger touched in 15:07.29 while McBroom finished in 15:16.33.
