USA NEWS: MICHAEL PHELPS AMONG CANDIDATES FOR TIME MAGAZINE'S PERSON OF THE YEAR

NEW YORK, New York, RENANG INDONESIA-November 27. MICHAEL Phelps is one of 40 names on a list of candidates for the prestigious Person of the Year honor from Time Magazine.

Though the votes of the magazine's editors are the only ones that count in picking this year's honoree (or honorees, as in last year's pick for protesters around the world), the magazine is allowing the public to express their opinions on which newsmaker should be listed among such historical figures as Albert Einstein, Barack Obama, Adolph Hitler and Mahatma Gandhi.

Phelps, obviously, was the biggest story out of the London Olympics, finishing his career with 22 medals, 18 of which were gold. He won the most medals of anyone in London, walking away with six.

Other athletes on the list for public vote include gymnast Gabby Douglas and runner Mo Farah. Others on the list include Obama, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, singer Psy and the Mars Rover. No athlete has ever been chosen for the Time Magazine, and about two-thirds of the honorees come from the world of politics.

The only non-human to win the award was the computer in 1982. The 2012 Person of the Year will be announced December 14. (swimmingworld)
