U.S. Olympic Trials: Michael Phelps Clinches Fourth Title of Meet; 13th Career Trials Crown; Tyler McGill Edges Ryan Lochte For Second

OMAHA, Nebraska, RENANG INDONESIA - IN the final Battle of the Titans between Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte, Phelps had more in the tank after Lochte's herculean triple last night, and wound up winning the men's 100 fly at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials.

Phelps, as he is wont to do in the 100 fly, powered back from turning six to win the event with a 51.14. That swim shot right past his world-leading time of 51.35 from semis, and gave him his 13th career title at Trials. Phelps has now won five titles (2008) and four titles (2004, 2012) in his career at a single Trials. He has won the following events: 2004 (200 fly, 200 free, 200 IM, 400 IM; 2008: 100 fly, 200 fly, 200 free, 200 IM, 400 IM; 2012: 200 free, 200 fly, 200 IM, 100 fly) for an incredible resume. He nearly doubles the second-highest Trials title winner with former training partner Katie Hoff having won seven in her time in the sport. 

Phelps is now looking at another run of eight events in London after winning an unprecedented eight golds. Phelps has earned swims in the 200 free, 100 fly, 200 fly, 200 IM and 400 IM, and could be on all three relays.

Tyler McGill held off Ryan Lochte for the second spot, 51.32 to 51.65. The second-place finish put McGill on his first Olympic team after taking fourth in the 100 fly in 2008. McGill jumped from fifth in the world to second behind only Phelps. Milorad Cavic fell to third with a 51.45.

Lochte finished with a seven-event slate heading into London. He made the team in the 200 free, 200 back, 200 IM and 400 IM as well as the likelihood that he swims on all three relays.

Tom Shields (51.86), Davis Tarwater (52.18), Tim Phillips (52.54), Eugene Godsoe (52.58) and Giles Smith (52.67) comprised the rest of the championship heat. (swimmingworld)
