USA NEWS: MICHAEL PHELPS AMONG CANDIDATES FOR TIME MAGAZINE'S PERSON OF THE YEAR

NEW YORK, New York, RENANG INDONESIA-November 27. MICHAEL Phelps is one of 40 names on a list of candidates for the prestigious Person of the Year honor from Time Magazine.

Though the votes of the magazine's editors are the only ones that count in picking this year's honoree (or honorees, as in last year's pick for protesters around the world), the magazine is allowing the public to express their opinions on which newsmaker should be listed among such historical figures as Albert Einstein, Barack Obama, Adolph Hitler and Mahatma Gandhi.

Phelps, obviously, was the biggest story out of the London Olympics, finishing his career with 22 medals, 18 of which were gold. He won the most medals of anyone in London, walking away with six.

Other athletes on the list for public vote include gymnast Gabby Douglas and runner Mo Farah. Others on the list include Obama, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, singer Psy and the Mars Rover. No athlete has ever been chosen for the Time Magazine, and about two-thirds of the honorees come from the world of politics.

The only non-human to win the award was the computer in 1982. The 2012 Person of the Year will be announced December 14. (swimmingworld)

WORLD NEWS: EAMON SULLIVAN ALLEGEDLY INVOLVED IN SCOOTER ACCIDENT, INJURING TWO

GAWLER, Australia, RENANG INDONESIA, November 27. THOUGH sources are offering different versions of the story, Australian media is reporting today that Olympian Eamon Sullivan had a role in a motor scooter accident last week that injured two people.

Sullivan, a former world record holder in the 50 and 100 freestyles, was attending a bachelor party in South Australia for a friend and requested to borrow a motor scooter at the party, according to an article in The Australian. No one disputes that Sullivan borrowed the scooter for a joyride with another partygoer, but what happened later is where stories deviate.

Australian TV station Nine Network reported that Sullivan, 27, drove the scooter on the sidewalk and crashed into a table, injuring two people. Police reports list a 27-year-old male as being responsible, but do not say if it was Sullivan or the other unknown rider. That male was charged with disorderly conduct and two counts of assault.

Sullivan's PR team said no charges have been filed against Sullivan, adding that there is "no evidence that Eamon was the party responsible for any such accident." (swimmingworld)

WORLD NEWS: OMAR PINZON ALLEGEDLY TESTS POSITIVE FOR COCAINE

LOS ANGELES, California, November 28. COLOMBIA's Omar Pinzon has allegedly tested positive for cocaine, according to Swimming World correspondent Alex Pussieldi in his Brazilian blog.

The positive test occurred at the Colombian National Games two weeks ago. There, he won gold in the 100 and 200 back as well as the 200 IM. He also took third in the 400 IM. The positive test likely will boot Pinzon from the World Short Course Championships in Instanbul next month.

Pinzon, who is the South American record holder in the 200-meter backstroke in long course (1:56.40) and short course (1:52.34), has been training under Dave Salo at the Trojan Swim Club in Los Angeles the past two years. Previously, Pinzon trained at the University of Florida. Pinzon is also a three-time Olympian, having competed at the 2004, 2008 and 2012 Olympics.

Pinzon has said he hopes to clear his name, saying all he has seen so far was a positive test from the A sample with metabolites for cocaine, and that the B sample was opened yesterday and is undergoing testing.

"I'm a little down, but I think the most important thing is to get my name clean," Pinzon told local radio. "I know this goes against all my principles and all the things I've already tried to leave as a legacy. But, my conscience is very clear because I know that's not what my family would do, which is most important to me, and my career. Then, I will continue with my head held high, and I trust in God that all things will be okay."

Menurut laporan, dua tamu meminjam skuter milik seorang tamu lainnya.

Sepuluh Juta Dollar buat Renang

EUROPEAN SHORT COURSE CHAMPIONSHIPS: HANNAH MILEY, RIKKE MOELLER PEDERSEN SET EURO RECORDS ON LAST NIGHT OF EURO SHORT COURSE CHAMPS

RENANG INDONESIA-CHARTRES, France, November 25. THE European short course record book took a bit of a hit on the final night of the European Short Course Championships in France. Hannah Miley and Rikke Moeller Pederson both put on a show in their respective events.

FINALS

Women's 400 IM
Hungary's Zsuzsanna Jakabos took the swim out fast, under world record pace early on, but faded badly down the stretch as Great Britain's Hannah Miley touched out Hungary's Katinka Hosszu, 4:23.47 to 4:23.91, for the European record and textile best. Jakabos, meanwhile, placed third in 4:25.61.

Both Miley and Hosszu cleared the European record of 4:24.21 set by Mireia Belmonte Garcia in 2010, as well as Belmonte Garcia's meet record of 4:24.55 from Poland last year. Julia Smit's world record of 4:21.04 from the techsuit era withstood the early challenge. Miley and Hosszu now stand third and fourth all time in the event's history, while Jakabos moved into the top 10. Kathryn Meaklim remains second with a 4:22.8 from the 2009 Singapore stop on the World Cup circuit.

"I'm shocked that I was that fast!" Miley said. "Last year I had a 4:26, and I wanted to clock the same time or a little bit faster, and now I've got a new European record: This was a great event for me, but also really tough. I'm happy that it's over."

Men's 200 breast
Russia's Vyacheslav Sinkevich surged to victory in the men's 200 breast with a time of 2:04.55, while Ukraine's Igor Borysik (2:05.12) and Andriy Kovalenko (2:05.21) placed second and third in the finale. Sinkevich's time matched Sean Mahoney's effort from the Berlin stop of the World Cup for the top time in the world this year. Borysik and Kovalenko moved into the top five with their swims.

"I don't understand the reason, but in this pool I have difficulties to get a good feeling in the water," Sinkevich said. "Therefore it was a difficult race for me. Nevertheless, it's the greatest success of my career."

Women's 200 free
She gave the world record a run, under pace at the 100-meter mark, but Camille Muffat wound up turning in a winning time of 1:52.20 about a second off the global standard of 1:51.17 owned by Federica Pellegrini. Muffat's time just clipped her previous lifetime best of 1:52.28 from the Berlin stop of the World Cup, that ranks her third all time in the event and is the fastest ever in textile. Allison Schmitt is still the second fastest swimmer ever with a 1:51.67 from the 2009 Duel in the Pool. France's Charlotte Bonnet took second in 1:54.00, while Russia's Veronika Popova touched third in 1:54.20. Bonnet moved into the top 25 with that swim.

"The obvious goal for me was to win this race - whatever the time," Muffat said. "My problem was the time span between the French nationals last week and this weekend, because today it's my eighth competition day with just three rest days in between. That's a bit too short."

Men's 100 IM
Russia's Vlad Morozov has been on fire this week, already winning the men's 100 free with a textile best. Tonight, he posted the only sub 52 second time in the sprint medley with a 51.89 for the win. Slovenia's Peter Mankoc, the world-record holder, took second in 52.64, while Estonia's Martti Aljand earned third in 52.92. Morozov vaulted to 12th all time in the event's history with his swim, while Mankoc still holds is global standard with a blistering 50.76 from the 2009 Euro Short Course Champs during the techsuit era.

"Six medals and perhaps a seventh with the freestyle relay - I would never have dared to dream about that!" Morozov said. "However, I had decided to get close to Peter Mankoc's world record, and that's why I'm a bit disappointed."

Women's 100 fly
Italy's Ilaria Bianchi used a superior back half to push her way to a win in 56.40, while Belgium's Kimberly Buys took second in 57.00. Denmark's Jeanette Ottesen Gray wound up third overall in 57.13 after leading at the 50-meter mark. Bianchi's time is the best in the world this year, clearing Therese Alshammar's 56.68 from the Stockholm stop of the World Cup. Bianchi also vaulted to 18th in the all time rankings with her swim, bettering her Italian record of 56.86 set at the Berlin stop of the World Cup earlier this fall.

"I didn't expect to win this race, because of the strong competition," Bianchi said. "My aim was to set a new Italian record, and that's what I achieved. The gold medal is the icing on the cake."

Men's 200 free
France's Yannick Agnel cruised to victory in the event with a 1:41.46, while Belgium's Pieter Timmers touched second in 1:43.08. France's Gregory Mallet earned third in 1:43.21. Agnel's time was off his best of 1:39.70 set in Angers. Some might have been disappointed that he did not break the world record after a promising global record in the 400 free. However, Paul Biedermann remained firmly in control of the standard with a 1:39.37 from Berlin in 2009.

"I controlled my efforts throughout the entire championships and despite a certain tiredness I won today - which was my aim," Agnel said.

Women's 100 breast
Denmark's Rikke Moeller Pedersen kept on rolling at this meet with a European record in the 100 breast as she blazed to a 1:04.12. That swim eclipsed her 1:04.21 from Saint Petersburg in 2009, and bettered her meet record of 1:04.49 from yesterday. Czech's Petra Chocova touched second in 1:05.50, while Spain's Marina Garcia Urzainqui earned third in 1:05.82. Pedersen shot to sixth in the all time rankings, just behind Satomi Suzuki's 1:04.11 from the 2011 Japanese Short Course Championships.

"I had to settle down after the Olympics before restarting into the new season," Pedersen said. "I'm still in the build-up process with my new swimming technique, and to improve my own European record is simply fantastic."

Men's 100 back
France's Jeremy Stravius led a French 1-2 with a sub-50 time of 49.70. Compatriot Ben Stasiulis placed second in 50.31, while Italy's Damiano Lestingi took home third in 51.35. Stanislav Donets still has the top time this year with a 49.49 from the Tokyo stop of the World Cup, but that time will likely fall in Instanbul. The sub-50 is Stravius' first, having a previous top time of 50.38 from the 2009 Euro Short Course Championships. He skyrocketed to ninth all time in the event's history, and cleared Camille Lacourt's French record of 49.80 in the process.

"Several people in the French team thought I was capable of swimming below 50 seconds, but I didn't," Stravius said. "So I have to admit that I'm positively surprised by my time."

Women's 200 back
Ukraine's Daryna Zevina threw down the first sub 2:02 time of the year with a meet-record time of 2:01.97 in the distance dorsal. France's Alexianne Castel took second in 2:03.23, while Czech's Simona Baumrtova wound up third in 2:03.43. Zevina's time bettered her meet standard of 2:02.25 set in Poland in 2011, and crushed her previous season best of 2:02.99 from the Doha stop of the World Cup. Zevina's meet record had also stood as her lifetime best as she became just the eighth swimmer under 2:02 in the history of the event. She now stands ninth all time with her new Ukrainian record.

"I set a new personal best today, and that should be a good starting point for the World Championships in Istanbul," Zevina said.

Men's 50 fly
Spain's Rafael Munoz Perez touched out France's Fred Bousquet, 22.53 to 22.54, in the men's sprint fly, while Ukraine's Andriy Govorov wound up third in 22.72. Those swims pushed Munoz Perez and Bousquet to third and fourth in the world this year behind Matt Targett (22.30) and Roland Schoeman (22.34). Munoz Perez (22.33) and Bousquet (22.17) have been faster in their careers, as they own top 10 all-time performances.

"There was a lot of luck in the race," Munoz Perez said. "In this morning's heat it wasn't going well for me, but this afternoon I had the necessary confidence and won by the blink of an eye."

Women's 50 free
Belarus' Aliaksandra Herasimenia became the first swimmer under 24 seconds this year with a sizzling time of 23.85. Estonia's Triin Aljand earned second-place honors in 24.24, while Denmark's Jeanette Ottesen Gray placed third in 24.33. Herasimenia cleared her lifetime best of 23.95, that also stands as a national record. With the performance, she jumped from 18th all time to a 13th-ranked tie with Lara Jackson. Aljand, meanwhile, has been faster with a 23.92 to her credit.

"That's a great finish for me at these championships," Herasimenia said. "I' m truly proud of myself. I was convinced of winning gold, but when you get onto the starting block, there is always a little bit of uncertainty."

Men's 200 free relay
France stormed its way to victory in the men's relay with a swift 1:23.31 from Florent Manaudou (20.83), Fred Bousquet (20.65), Jeremy Stravius (21.00) and Amaury Leveaux (20.83). Meanwhile, Russia's Vlad Morozov (20.78), Andrey Grechin (21.21), Evgeny Lagunov (20.84) and Vitaly Syrnikov (21.16) touched second in 1:23.99. Belgium's Emmanuel Vanluchene (21.75), Pieter Timmers (21.27), Yoris Grandjean (21.58) and Jasper Aerents (21.00) earned third in 1:25.60.

Women's 200 medley relay
Denmark's Kristina Thomsen (28.16), Rikke Moeller Pedersen (29.83), Jeanette Ottesen Gray (25.10) and Pernille Blume (24.32) won the event in 1:47.41, while Czech's Simona Baumrtova (26.98), Petra Chocova (29.34), Lucie Svecena (26.59) and Aneta Pechancova (24.76) touched in 1:47.67 for second. France's Laure Manaudou (27.04), Fanny Babou (31.01), Melanie Henique (25.33) and Anna Santamans (24.32) closed out a close threeway finish with a 1:47.70.

SEMIFINALS

Women's 50 free
Belarus' Aliaksandra Herasimenia topped semis of the splash-and-dash with a 24.36, while Denmark's Jeanette Ottesen Gray placed second in 24.45. The duo tied for the 100 free title at the 2011 World Long Course Championships. France's Anna Santamans (24.53), Russia's Rozaliya Masretdinova (24.53), Estonia's Triin Aljand (24.57), Serbia's Miroslava Najdanovski (24.77) and Finland's Hanna-Maria Seppala (24.79) qualified third through seventh, while Belarus' Sviatlana Khakhlova and Turkey's Burcu Dolunay set up a swimoff with matching 24.83s for eighth. Prestasi Anjlok, Pimpinan Renang Australia Mundur

RENANG INDONESIA, SURABAYA - Pengurus Provinsi Persatuan Olahraga Renang Seluruh Indonesia (Pengprov PRSI) Jawa Timur tetap optimis soal animo peserta Kejuaraan Renang Antar Perkumpulan Daerah (Krapda) 2012.

Surabaya tuan rumah AYG 2021 tanpa bidding

SWIMMING WORLD CUP SWC 2012, Singapore day 2: Kenneth To (AUS) and Katinka Hosszu (HUN) win 2012 World Cup title

RENANG INDONESIA-November 11, 2012 SINGAPORE - Kenneth To (AUS) and Katinka Hosszu (HUN) were crowned as new champions of the FINA/ARENA Swimming World Cup, whose 2012 edition concluded in Singapore (SIN) on November 10-11. Both the Australian and Hungarian swimmers were in the lead of the men’s and women’s ranking before the last leg and just confirmed their credentials in the final meet of the competition. To was even the best performer in Singapore, winning the 100m individual medley on Day 1, in a time of 51.50 (957 points), while Hosszu got the second best performance among women, finishing second (2:06.78, 949 points) to her compatriot Zsuzsanna Jakabos in the 200m IM. Both for To and Hosszu, this was their first success in the FINA/ARENA Swimming World Cup.
“I was confident of winning (the overall title) after winning the 100 metre individual medley (IM) last night. It was difficult today, not being able to sleep last night. I was very happy, very excited,” To said.
“This is my first time doing the entire series, and it’s been an amazing experience. It taught me how to back up race after race, and how to perform whenever it’s needed. Picking up the wins along the way helped boost my confidence, knowing that I can perform in any situation thrown at me. My goal for now is to make the Australian team for the world long course championships in Barcelona next year. That will be my major target,” he concluded.
Hosszu also made a memorable World Cup season, getting no less than 39 gold medals (including four titles in Singapore) throughout the eight meets. “It was a lot easier to motivate myself with so many good swimmers to race with. I just tried to win every race I took part in. I planned to swim in many events for this series, and it’s really good training with these fantastic swimmers,” considered the Magyar champion, who bagged, as Kenneth To, US$ 100,000 for her overall win in 2012. Another highlights among women were the fifth victory of Britta Steffen (GER) in the 50m free (24.10 – her best time being 24.01 in Tokyo), the third triumph of Jessica Hardy (USA) in the 100m breaststroke (1:05.58 – she had been fastest in Berlin, with 1:04.58), the fifth victory of Melissa Ingram (NZL) in the 200m backstroke (2:04.93 – the fastest gold of the World Cup belonging to Daryna Zevina, from Ukraine, who clocked 2:02.99 in Doha), the sixth success for Rachel Goh (AUS) in the 50m backstroke (27.06 – she did better in Beijing, with 26.66), and the first gold for Jeanette Ottesen (DEN) in the 100m butterfly (57.75 – the best time of the series was established by Therese Alshammar at home, touching first in Stockholm in 56.68).

Among men, the 100m IM was the fastest race of the day (fastest and third best performances of the day, by To and Bovell respectively), but Stanislav Donets (RUS) was also quite successful in the 100m backstroke – 49.82 worth 947 points (the second best result of the session). It was the sixth win of Donets in this event during the series (the Tokyo victory being the fastest, in 49.49). Kazuya Kaneda (JPN) continued to dominate in the 200m butterfly, getting his fifth title of the year in 1:52.23 – he has faster at home, in Tokyo, with an 1:51.08 effort.

Robert Hurley (AUS) collected his third gold in the 400m free (3:41.01), Sean Mahoney (USA) got his fourth success in the 200m breaststroke (2:06.17), Christian Sprenger (AUS) repeated his Tokyo triumph in the 50m breaststroke (26.69), Tommaso D’Orsogna (AUS) was the most prolific winner in the 2012 series in the 100m free (fifth victory in Singapore, in a time of 47.03), while Darian Townsend (RSA, 4:09.24) and Qi Bin Zhang (CHN, 23.09) assured their first triumphs in the 400m IM and 50m butterfly respectively.

In the final classification, Jakabos (second) and Britta Steffen (GER, third) completed the top-3 among women, while George Bovell (TRI), the main challenger of To in the 100m IM was second and Stanislav Donets (RUS) finished third. Donets, together with Steffen, was the only swimmer that managed to win the same event throughout the entire series: he was always the best in the men’s 50m backstroke, while the 2008 Olympic champion from Germany was the fastest in the 100m free (getting the best time of the season precisely in Singapore, thanks to her winning effort of 52.38). The prize money for the second and third placed of the World Cup overall ranking are of US$ 50,000 and US$ 30,000 respectively.

The second day in Singapore was highlighted by the fast triumph of Jeanette Ottesen (DEN) in the women’s 50m butterfly (clocking the best time of the series in 25.42), by the victory of Jessica Hardy (USA) in the 50m breaststroke (her fourth success in 2012), by the sixth successes of Rachel Goh (AUS) in the 100m backstroke (57.34), of Darian Townsend (RSA) in the 200m individual medley (1:54.16) and of Rie Kaneto (JPN) in the women’s 200m breaststroke (2:20.18).  (fina)

Hosszu (HUN) raises gold medal tally to 35 after Tokyo

RENANG INDONESIA-Lausanne (SUI), November 7, 2012 – Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu was once more the swimmer to beat in the seventh leg of the FINA/ARENA Swimming World Cup, taking place in Tokyo (JPN) on November 6-7, 2012. In the Japanese capital, the Magyar star, dominator of this year’s circuit, earned five gold medals (for a total of 35 titles so far!) in the 200 and 800m free, 200m butterfly, and 200m and 400m individual medley. In the shortest of the medley events, she established the best female performance of the competition, thanks to a winning time of 2:07.51 (933 points).

Hosszu reinforced her lead of the overall ranking among women and is now the most probable winner of the 2012 World Cup before the last meet in Singapore (where points count double). Her only challenger is Zsuszanna Jakabos, also from Hungary, who has a theoretical possibility of getting the 2012 title if she establishes a new World Record in Singapore and Hosszu does not score in the final leg of the series.

In Tokyo, the other highlights among women were the double victories of Britta Steffen (GER) in the 50m and 100m free (seventh consecutive win in this event), of Jessica Hardy (USA) in the 50m and 100m breaststroke, and of Melissa Ingram (NZL) in the 400m free and 200m backstroke.

In the men’s field, local star Daiya Seto was the best in the 200m and 400m individual medley. In the latter, he set a new World Cup record of 4:00.02, improving the time (4:00.12) he had set in the fifth meet of the circuit in Berlin (GER). Stanislav Donets (RUS) established the most valuable performance of the meet in the 100m backstroke (49.49 – 967 points), while Michael Klueh (USA) got the gold with the fastest winning times so far in this World Cup in the 400m free (3:40.23) and 1500m free (14:38.64). George Bovell (TRI) was the best in the 50m free and 100m IM, and is second behind Kenneth To (AUS) in the overall ranking. The last meet in Singapore (November 10-11) will therefore be decisive to determine the final winner among men.

GOLD MEDAL CLINIC1st FINA Gold Medal Swimming Coaches Clinic, what a success!

Sarah Chiarello, FINA Communications Department

AKUATIK INDONESIA-The 1st FINA Gold Medal Swimming Coaches Clinic concluded successfully with more than 200 swimming coaches from a hundred nations. The golden opportunity to exchange ideas, experience and knowledge with top-level coaches from swimming powerhouses like USA, Australia or China was praised by many participants.
The coaches attending the clinic were offered a wide range of visions of coaching, practical training cycles, personal experiences, motivation tips for swimmers, and many pieces of advice on the balance between training and life outside the pool and the relationship between a coach and his athlete.
Lorna Riley, a level-3 swimming coach from Zimbabwe, said at the end of the clinic: "It gives us practical tools to improve grassroots swimming in Zimbabwe and inspires us all to go back." Thanks to her kids who where good swimmers, Lorna Riley started coaching swimming and now manages swimming within the country's Aquatics Union. At the FINA World Aquatics Convention for the first time, she talks about the current situation of swimming in the Southern African country: "There is a shortage of swimming pools so identifying talents is not an easy task." Swimming infrastructures are in many instances the starting point to develop the sport. "It would be good to include coaches of different levels to enrich the exchange of ideas," she added, something FINA will certainly consider for the future editions of the event. (fina)

SWIMMING WORLD CUP SWC 2012, Tokyo day 2: Hosszu (HUN) bags two more gold for a total 35

RENANG INDONESIA-November 7, 2012 TOKYO - Katinka Hosszu (HUN) collected two more gold medals in the final day of the seventh leg of the FINA/ARENA Swimming World Cup 2012, which concluded in Tokyo (JPN) on November 7. After three victories on Day 1, the Magyar champion has now an accumulated total of 35 gold medals in this year’s series, being the most successful athlete of the competition.

Hosszu dominated the women’s 200m butterfly in 2:05.90 and the 400m individual medley in 4:28.14, leaving in both cases her compatriot Zsuzsanna Jakabos with the silver medal. Moreover, Hosszu consolidated her lead in the overall ranking of the World Cup, and now, before the last leg in Singapore, she can only lose the title in one circumstance: if Jakabos establishes a new World Record in Singapore and she is not in the first 10 ranked swimmers of the meet. A very remote possibility given the regularity of Hosszu throughout the entire circuit.
On Day 2 in the Japanese capital, Britta Steffen (GER) added the 100m free crown to her 50m free success in the first day, becoming the only athlete to have won the same event in all seven legs of the FINA/ARENA Swimming World Cup. In Tokyo, Steffen established the fastest winning time of her seven triumphs in the 100m free, touching home in 52.42.

Jessica Hardy (USA) also made a successful 50-10m victory in breaststroke, clocking the fastest 50m in the 2012 edition, with a winning time of 29.92. Previously, Hardy had won in Moscow (30.29) and in Berlin (30.13). In the 200m breaststroke, Rie Kaneto (JPN) got her fifth straight win, the fastest, in 2:18.38. In the 400m free and 100m IM, Melissa Ingram (NZL, 4:05.22) and Sophie Allen (GBR, 59.50) respectively got the gold in front of a certain… Katinka Hosszu!

Among men, George Bovell (TRI) added another success in Tokyo, by triumphing in the 50m free (he had won the 100m IM in the first day). It was Bovell’s fourth triumph in 2012, while Anthony Ervin (USA), second in Tokyo, accumulates three victories.

In the longest event of the programme, Michael Klueh (USA) got the gold in 14:38.64, the best winning time of the series, thus conquering his second title in Tokyo after the 400m free. Stanislav Donets (RUS), the best performer of the meet thanks to his victory in the 100m backstroke, also got the crown in the 50m, touching first in 23.25. Finally, local hero Daiya Seto, who had established a World Cup record on Day 1 in the 400m IM, was again the best in the 200m IM, earning gold in 1:52.48, the first sub 1:53 effort of the series (fina)

WORLD NEWS: TOKYO WORLD CUP, NIGHT TWO: WHO WILL COLLECT GOLD? ASIDE FROM HOSSZU, OF COURSE

RENANG INDONESIA, TOKYO, Japan, November 6. ONE thing to look forward to with each stop on the FINA World Cup circuit is the young athletes each host country sends to race against the elite world-ranked swimmers. Japan provided plenty of fresh, young talent on the first night of the Tokyo World Cup, and swimmers representing Japan dominated the heat sheets. The Japanese also made their mark on the first night of finals, controlling the medal stand in the men's 400IM, 200 butterfly and 200 breaststroke.
So what can World Cup enthusiasts expect on the second night in Tokyo? For tonight,Swimming World has compiled a list of repeat offenders who continue to dominate in certain events.

Germany's Britta Steffen has had a stronghold on the sprint events throughout the circuit. Tonight's 100 freestyle will be Steffen's to lose.

Katinka Hosszu dabbles in everything, and sees success throughout. Our best bet is that she'll come away with at least three new gold medals tonight. She is racing in the 400 IM, 200 butterfly, 400 freestyle and 100 IM.

The Netherland's Inge Dekker has been a force in the sprint butterfly events, and she'll probably repeat her 50 butterfly title tonight, especially coming off a win in the 100 butterfly yesterday. The same is true for the United State's Jessica Hardy, who will race the 50 breaststroke tonight, coming off a win in the 100.

The United States' Michael Kleuh raced his way to victory in last night's 400 freestyle. He will defend his 1500 freestyle title tonight from Beijing, and with the way he's been swimming these last two circuit stops, it's going to be tough to top him.

Japan's Daiya Seto will try for the 400-200 medley double, with the 200 IM slated for tonight. He raced his way to a circuit best in the 400 yesterday in finals, but will still feel pressure from Australi's Kenneth To, who has had a remarkable circuit run.

Can the Japanese maintain their monopoly on the podium in the men's breaststroke and butterfly events? Or will the United States' Sean Mahoney and Australia's Christian Sprenger upset their stronghold in the 100 breaststroke? In the 100 butterfly, outside competition looks sparse.

Then there is everyone's favorite 50 freestyle rivalry between Trinidad and Tobago's George Bovell and the United State's Anthony Ervin. We'd venture a guess at the winner, but it's more exciting leaving it up to chance. Both are heading into tonight with gold medals from yesterday's finals under their belts (100 freestyle for Ervin, 100 IM for Bovell), it should be noted. (swimmingworld)

SWIMMING WORLD CUP SWC 2012, Tokyo day 1: Daiya Seto (JPN) improves his World Cup record in the 400m IM

RENANG INDONESIA, November 6, 2012 TOKYO - Japan’s Daiya Seto was the swimmer in evidence in the first day of the seventh leg of the FINA/ARENA Swimming World Cup 2012, being held in Tokyo (JPN) on November 6-7, after establishing a new record of the competition in the men’s 400m individual medley. The 18-year-old athlete touched home in 4:00.02, bettering the previous World Cup record (4:00.12) he had set in the fifth meet of the series in Berlin (GER). Moreover, it was Seto’s sixth win in this event throughout the 2012 circuit – the Japanese star was not present in Beijing (CHN).

Still among men, Stanislav Donets (RUS) got the most valuable performance of this inaugural day in Tokyo, winning the 100m backstroke in a good time of 49.49 (worth 967 points). Donets is also dominating this event in 2012, being his fifth victory (and the fastest) in the World Cup – his previous best time had been set in Moscow (RUS), in 49.74. Also in good shape, Kazuya Kaneda (JPN) comfortably won the 200m butterfly, clocking 1:51.08 for the gold. It was also the fastest winning time of 2012 in this event, after a previous 1:51.22 effort of Kaneda in Beijing. At home, this good result gave him the second most valuable performance of the day in the men’s field (947 points).

George Bovell (TRI) and Kenneth To (AUS) continued their interesting duel in the 100m individual medley, with Bovell triumphing in 51.80 (he was faster when he also won in Berlin, clocking 51.20). It was Bovell’s third victory this year, while To (second in Tokyo, in 51.83) accumulates four wins in this World Cup.

In the 200m breaststroke, Akihiro Yamaguchi (JPN) got his first success of the series, earning gold in 2:04.64 - this year, only Sean Mahoney (USA) was better, with a 2:04.55 win in Berlin -, while Michael Klueh (USA) also got his first triumph in the 400m free, with the fastest winning time of the series (3:40.23). Klueh has been the 1500m free gold medallist in Beijing (CHN), at the previous leg of the series.

In the women’s field, Katinka Hosszu (HUN), the great dominator of the season got three more gold medals, this time in the 200m IM, 200m free and 800m free. In the medley event, she established the best female performance of the day, clocking 2:07.51 (933 points). The Magyar champion got her fifth victory in this event, which had in Shiwen Ye (CHN) the fastest winner so far, with a 2:06.10 finish in the “Water Cube”. It was also the fifth gold medal for Hosszu in the 200m free and 800m free.

The other highlights of the day include the triumph of Britta Steffen (GER) in the 50m free, with the fastest time of the 2012 series – 24.01. It was the fourth victory so far for the German star, 2008 Olympic champion in the 50m and 100m free. Jessica Hardy (USA) was the fastest in the 100m breaststroke (1:04.86), getting her second win in this World Cup (in Berlin, she earned gold in the best time so far, 1:04.58).

SWIMMING WORLD CUP SWC 2012, Beijing day 2: Olympic champion Ye stuns Hosszu in 400m IM

Zhou Xin, FINA Press Correspondent in China

RENANG INDONESIA, November 3, 2012 BEIJING - Chinese 16-year-old swimming star Ye Shiwen claimed her second gold medal at the FINA/ARENA Swimming World Cup in Beijing as the double Olympic champion came from behind to win the women's 400m individual medley.

Ye, gold medallist in this event at the 2012 London Olympic Games, powered home for the win, clocking 4: 26.93 and beating Hungary's Katinka Hosszu by 0.83 seconds. Her compatriot Zsuzsanna Jakabos took third in 4:31.28.
"Actually I am not going to celebrate," said Ye, who swept two golds in the 200m and 400m IM with a new world record at the London Games. "I am not satisfied with the result. I still have a lot of problems in my turns. I still have a lot to improve," she added.
"I felt tired after yesterday's 200m IM. I was not nervous during the 400m IM final, even though I was behind in the first 200m, I knew that I could catch up. I am used to come from behind," Ye said.
Shao Yiwen, another Chinese young talent, claimed her second gold in the 400m free in 4:00.56, after her victory in the 200m on the previous day. Zhang Yufei took the silver in a time of 4:06.48 while Melissa Ingram from New Zealand was third in 4:06.53.

Hosszu collected the most medals at this first Asian stop, pocketing three gold, one silver and one bronze. She was also the busiest swimmer by taking part in as many as eight events.
"I felt very tried, but I am happy with the result. I just want to do something different and I think it's interesting," Hosszu said.  (fina)

Ye, 16, who stunned the world by claiming both the 200m and 400m medley golds at the London Olympic Games and breaking the world record in the 200m medley, stormed in 2:06.10. The current meet record is held by Evelyn Verraszto of Hungary, who set it in Moscow on November 2, 2009.

"It's a pity that I missed the meet record. My time was a little bit slower than my expectation. But it is OK; I am just coming back from a Kunming high land training camp. I am not in my best shape," Ye said.
Zsuzsanna Jakabos and Katinka Hosszu of Hungary came second (2:08.22) and third (2:08.35), respectively.
Hosszu, number one so far in the World Cup women's ranking, won the women's 800m freestyle in 8:21.49; she was also fourth in the 200m free in 1:55.25, and seventh in the 200m back in 2:09.86.
